Jon:"In fact, I dug around a little more and found some information about 1914 in this book we’ve been studying."
....
Hopelessly-honest JW:"Well, that's a relief! Most people would have google'd jehovahs witnesses 1914 and found a wealth of fascinating information regarding our false prophecies, and even the various historical revisions the Watchtower makes when referring to what we used to teach. I sure am glad that your idea of digging for information is confined to reading one of our books. You will be a Model Bible Study."

Writing campaign to Washington DC papers in view of International Convention
by Londo111 inive heard from a credible source that the landover (dc) international convention is important to the society in view of the 100 year anniversary of "kingdom rule" and the location being near the capital of the "seventh world power".
perhaps they hope this particular international sends a message.
we know that come convention time usually there is some feel good fluff piece in the newspapers about the watchtower religion.

To start you off, then:
"One prominent American religion confidently predicted that the world would end in 1914. Well, 1914 has come and gone, and -- while the events of that year were certainly of some importance -- the world does not, at least so far as I can see, seem to have ended. There are at least three responses that an organized religion can make in the face of such a failed and fundamental prophecy. They could have said, "Oh, did we say '1914'? So sorry, we meant '2014.' A slight error in calculation. Hope you weren't inconvenienced in any way." But they did not. They could have said, "Well, the world would have ended, except we prayed very hard and interceded with God so He spared the Earth." But they did not. Instead, they did something much more ingenious.
They announced that the world had in fact ended in 1914, and if the rest of us hadn't noticed, that was our lookout. It is astonishing in the face of such transparent evasions that this religion has any adherents at all."
Broca's Brain, Carl Sagan (New York: Ballantine Books, 1979, pp. 332-33)
..........
"Jehovah's witnesses pointed to the year 1914, decades in advance, as marking the start of the conclusion of the system of things."
Awake! 1973 Jan 22 p.8
........
"But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble."

Theists, why does God allow suffering..
by The Quiet One in..specifically, the suffering of animals.
you can talk about free will/sin/people choosing to not listen to god etc to explain human suffering being allowed.. but how can you love a god that allows animals, that haven't sinned or chosen to not have anything to do with god, to have their short lives ended in often long, drawn out, painful ways.
i could list stories i've read that would probably make you feel ill, but i'm not looking to shock anyone or start an emotional debate.

Ablebodiedman said:
"If those most intelligent men are allowed to continue then I think the earth and its creatures are doomed to even more immense suffering far beyond anything we have witnessed or can presently understand.
I hope Jesus Christ comes soon!"
Why is He allowing them all to suffer and be brutally murdered, along with allowing yet more animal species to slide towards extinction, right now?
What does your 'hope' do for animals today? And what does Jesus do for them? -

I said: "Ablebodiedman, do you think that animals did not hunt each other before mankind existed?"
You replied:"I really do not know the answer to that question.."
..........
"Entelodonts lived in the forests and plains where they were the apex predatorsof North America's early Miocene and Oligocene, consuming carrion and live animals and rounding off their diets with plants and tubers. They would have hunted large animals, like the cow-sized artiodactyl Eporeodon major and the sheep-sized cameloid Poebrotherium wilsoni, dispatching them with a bite from their jaws. Some fossil remains of these other animals have been found with the bite marks of entelodonts on them."
"Entelodonts, sometimes nicknamed hell pigs or terminator pigs, are an extinct family of pig-like omnivores endemic to forests and plains of North America, Europe, and Asia from the late Eoceneto early Miocene epochs (37.2—16.3 million years ago)"

Translating JWFacts to Spanish... Update?
by ILoveTTATT inas you all may know, it is an ongoing project to translate jwfacts to spanish.
given that there are more than 2 spanish-speaking jw's for every one that speaks english, it can be safely said that spanish is the #1 language in the jw world (even though everything is made originally in english).. the spanish-speaking jw's are harder to convince.
i attribute it almost 100% to socioeconomic factors.

"In the second half of 2014 DC will play host to two high-profile events, the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in July and Jehovah's Witness International Convention in August. Microsoft expects to welcome 15,000 attendees and utilize over 68,000 hotel room nights while the Jehovah's Witness convention expects over 60,000 attendees, made up of families from around the globe and expects to bring some $41 million in impact to the local economy."

"The leadership have been telling their followers to warn people that they need to either join the Witnesses or face destruction for more than a century now, which is all part of the excitement building up towards this convention, as it makes the average Witness think that the much longed-for end of the world 'must be close now'.
They eagerly look forward to the time when any who disagree with their teachings, or do not listen to them, are destroyed as part of an earthwide cleansing of 'wickedness'. This is despite the fact that many Witnesses have family members that refuse to join them."
From part of my letter. It would be great to have other people post a template letter, as I'm no Shakespeare..
IMHO, I can't see an editor being interested that Jw's used to say the end was coming in 1914, then changed it. Although it would be less controversial.. Hasn't every doomsday religion in history done something similar, though?
Anyway, I'm backing off now, I hope someone finds an idea worth using. -

Yeah, I know that the grammar stinks and the punctuation is all wrong, but I'm not exactly a Grade A student.
If someone could tidy it up/add to it, that would be brilliant.
